Work resumes Seven Months after Quake

Port-au-Prince, 1 September 2010 – (AHP) – Work resumed Wednesday in the Court of Appeal in Port-au-Prince, more than seven months after being suspended following the collapse of palace justice in the January 12 earthquake, as a new substitute government commissioner has been installed at the Court of Appeal in Port-au-Prince and another one at the Civil Court of Croix des Bouquets
The Court of Appeal in Port-au-Prince now resides in a new location at the Judicial Academy on the route de Frères.

The Director General of the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, Mr. Anthony Andre, who chaired the opening ceremony of the new court facilities, said that the resumption of work will help to speed up a number of outstanding cases.

These cases did not proceed after the tragedy of January 12 and judgments rendered by courts of first instance and subject to appeal, could not be subject to review by the Court, said Mr. Andre Antoine, who spoke of relief for litigants in the courts of the Croix-des-Bouquets, Port-au-Prince, Petit Goave and Jacmel, among others.

The new deputy commissioner of the Government of the court of Appeal in Port-au-Prince, Mr. Kebreau Zamor has promised to work for the proper functioning of the system.

As the new commissioner of the government installed at Croix-de-Bouquets, Jean Serge Joseph, also promised to use his experience to advance justice in this jurisdiction.

The Minister Paul Denis, who carried out the inauguration, said he relied on the experience, competence, integrity and ability of Mr. Joseph to carry out the mission entrusted to him.

The jurisdiction of the Croix-des-Bouquets deserves special attention, said Paul Dennis since he had received many complaints against members of the judiciary in this jurisdiction.
