The uprising sent shockwaves through Britain and its colonies in the Caribbean. Enslaved people had revolted before 1791 but without success. The uprising in St Domingue was well-organised, tactical and led by men like Toussaint Louverture #SlaveryRemembranceDay #SRD

The English invaded St Domingue in 1794. They were at war with France & wanted to recapture what was one of the richest Caribbean colonies for themselves, and maintain slavery. Forces under the command of revolutionary Andre Rigaud forced them back. They withdrew in 1798. #SRD
