Dear Haiti Watcher,

The Haiti Support Group is delighted to announce the upcoming date of our next Annual General Meeting which will take place during the conference Rasanblaj Fanm: Stories of Haitian Womanhood, Past Present and Future. The Rasanblaj Fanm conference marks the 10th anniversary of the Institute for Black Atlantic Research and 220 years of Haitian independence.

AGM details are as follows:

Date: Thursday 11 July 2024
Time: 12.30 p.m.
Venue: University of Central Lancashire (UCLan), Preston, Lancashire, PR1 2HE
Room: Media Factory, Creative Innovation Zone
Cost: £10 (sign up via this link).

Please put this date in your diary. You can confirm your attendance at this AGM via Eventbrite. For those joining us virtually, you will be sent a zoom link ahead of the AGM. Please do consider registering for this event as a way of making a small donation to help with the running costs of our group even if you can’t be there on the day. Alternatively, you can make a more substantial donation via this link.

Nominations to the Haiti Support Group Executive Committee

If you would like to become more involved in our work by joining our Executive Committee, please email [email protected] by 12 p.m. on Thursday 20th June 2024 at the absolute latest. We ask that you include a short bio (100-150 words), a photo and your motivations for wanting to join us. We will then send out details of confirmed nominees to all registered attendees in time for the AGM.

Haiti Support Group Nominations

Aïda Roumer. Standing for: Chair

Aïda is a PhD candidate in Political Economy at Goethe University Frankfurt. In her research, she focuses on the economic interdependencies between Haiti and the Dominican Republic, with a particular emphasis on current border relations. Aïda is a member of the Haitian diaspora in Germany, with ties to Jérémie, Port-au-Prince and Ouanaminthe. 

Aïda is particularly interested in increasing the visibility of Haitian civil society organisations. If elected chair, she will work to strengthen cooperation between Haitian solidarity organisations in Europe, such as the German-Haitian Society (Deutsch-Haitianische Gesellschaft).

Eve Hayes. Standing for: Secretary

Eve has been a member of the Haiti Support Group since returning to the UK after the earthquake in 2010. She is former Programmes Coordinator and is currently Treasurer. Eve has extensive experience living and working across the Caribbean. For many years, Eve has played an instrumental role in keeping the HSG going,  navigating the group through many turbulent times and financial challenges.

Eve has written extensively for the Haiti Briefing, led multiple research missions to Haiti and has represented the group to the European Parliament, the United Nations, the Scottish and UK governments and to Caribbean diplomats.

Antony Stewart. Standing for: Treasurer

Antony has been a member of the Haiti Support Group for eight years, and is a former Chair and current Secretary of the group. He studied the history of Haiti for many years, completing a doctorate in 2019 that examined the birth, rise and legacy of international health interventions in Haiti in the early 20th Century. 

Antony has made numerous media appearances on behalf of the HSG including on BBC Newsnight and Sky News. He remains a vocal advocate for solidarity with Haiti’s progressive grassroots alongside his passionate interest in Haitian history and culture.

Shodona Kettle. Outgoing Chair.

Shodona is a long-time member of the Haiti Support Group and has led the HSG through many challenges. She is an ardent supporter of grassroots activism and all efforts to amplify the voices of Haitian civil society to everyone and anyone who will listen. Shodona is currently completing her PhD at UCL Institute of the Americas examining the transnational impact of national movements in the quest for reparations, healing, transformative justice and the reimagination of Afro-futures.
